Macondo Trio

Jazz

Macondo Trio’s music tends to make you lose all sense of time and space. It makes your blood boil little by little and slowly rises to your head.

Macondo blends modal and improvised jazz with African rhythms and childhood melodies. It brings together the diverse life experiences and backgrounds of each musician. As if under a spell, they musically and spiritually nourish each other and offer us a mixed jazz that simply asks to be shared. Macondo delivers an open and accessible jazz—an invitation to imagine what the world and living together could, or should, be like.

The adventure began when Beninese drummer Angelo Moustapha met Belgian saxophonist Sylvain Debaisieux. During artistic residencies in Belgium and Benin, they developed a shared rhythmic language, blending improvisation with sonic exploration. The arrival of Italian bassist Federico Stocchi completed this cosmopolitan trio, adding a deep, organic foundation to their musical world. Together, they recorded Macondo, a debut EP released in December 2022 on the Off Records label, a testament to a musical alchemy where the energy of groove meets the freedom of jazz.

Their new album, Morayò, released in March 2025 on the Dutch label Challenge Records, was enthusiastically received by both the press and the public during the release tour in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. On this occasion, the band performed at the Propulse festival as well as in the Flagey concert hall in Brussels.
